I-57-70 Rehabilitation Wins 2019 ACEC Illinois Special Achievement Award
March 19, 2019
Increased congestion at the crossroads of two major freeways, FAI-57 and FAI-70, prompted the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to upgrade the section where the two interstates merged through the City of Effingham. Awarded a Special Achievement Award by ACEC, Lochmueller Group provided the preliminary and final design of the roadway including five interchanges. The additional lanes and interchange improvements improved safety, reduced congestion, and allowed for increased truck access for the movement of goods as the area continues to develop.
During the early stages of design for the FAI Routes 57/70 reconstruction project, Lochmueller recommended that IDOT District 7 consider breaking up the $167.4M project into four distinct construction contracts. The primary motivation was to increase the District’s ability to secure partial construction funding for individual stand-alone contracts and to entice more bidders. Lochmueller worked closely with the District staff to define the limits for each contract and the project was ultimately successful in securing construction funds.
