We are happy to announce that Lochmueller was chosen as a State Finalist for the Edison Road & Ash Road Roundabout project in the 2021 ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards competition!
In coordination with St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties, Lochmueller Group provided design services for the construction of a modern single-lane roundabout to replace the existing 4-way stop-controlled intersection and complete the improvements to the Ash Road corridor. This was the missing piece of the broader infrastructure improvements along Ash Road to improve connectivity and mobility along the corridor from Cleveland Road to Old US 20. The project included connecting twin drainage basins, aesthetic improvements such as chevron brick pavers, and providing accommodations for residents’ driveway access.
The design team implemented several cost-effective solutions allowing the construction bids to come in significantly under budget. The design split the one retention basin into two and placed half on purchased right-of-way. By connecting the two retention basins with a storm sewer pipe, it allowed equalization so that they performed as one while providing a more effective land use.
