Downtown Belleville Square Water Main Replacement

Our Downtown Belleville Square Water Main Replacement Project has won a Merit Award in ACEC Illinois’ 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards!

Illinois American Water recognized the urgency to enhance service reliability and mitigate disruptions at the heart of the Central Business District in the City of Belleville, Illinois. To address these issues, Lochmueller was selected to provide design services, upgrading approximately 1,785 linear feet of existing water main from six-inch to twelve-inch diameter pipes.

The project involved constructing twelve-inch, eight-inch, and six-inch mains, as well as tying into a twenty-inch transmission main, with strategic valve placement at the iconic Belleville Square Fountain. The new mains were relocated to more accessible locations, facilitating easier operation, maintenance, and repairs, and consolidating mains where feasible.

The project had the potential to significantly impact major governmental and business operations, with service connections to the water main located within the street right of way. Central to the cultural vibrancy of the business district, the Belleville Square Fountain plays a crucial role in maintaining drinking water service and scheduling construction activities around city events. Lochmueller’s Public Outreach, Community Engagement, and Traffic Control Services were instrumental in ensuring the project's success, particularly during the construction phase. The construction period was carefully timed to align with the City of Belleville’s event calendar to minimize the impacts to the project area stakeholders.

Additionally, utility coordination with various service providers, including Ameren Illinois for gas and electric, Illinois American Water, the City of Belleville for sewer utilities, St. Clair County, Illinois Department of Transportation, and an experienced contractor Loellke Plumbing, Inc., was essential to the project's successful execution.
