I-44/Route 141 Interchange Design-Build

Location:
St. Louis, Missouri
Client:
Missouri Department of Transportation
Service Line:
Traffic Engineering & Planning

Lochmueller worked with MoDOT on a design-build project to reduce congestion and improve safety at the I-70 interchange with Route 141.

Lochmueller was part of the team to provide the best value proposal. Lochmueller’s services included all traffic and safety analyses, roadway design for four intersections north of the Meramec River including two new J-Turns; collector-distributor bridge and retaining wall design; traffic signal and ITS design; implementation of coordinated signal timing plans; and completion of an Access Justification Report (AJR) for the modified interchange.

During the procurement phase, Lochmueller developed transportation models in VISSIM, Synchro, and HCS to determine the solution that would maximize the mobility and safety of the I-44 and Route 141 corridors, while remaining within the limits of the available design-build project and budget. Lochmueller also completed a detailed Traffic Safety and Operations Report as part of the submittal to the MoDOT review team.

Lochmueller designed two new thru-turn (J-turn) signalized intersections on Route 141 at Vance Road and Marshall Road. These were highly innovative signal designs, that included a 3-ring signal timing structure, dummy phases, and advance detection. The opening of the thru-turn intersections has greatly improved mobility along the heavily traveled segment of Route 141 through Valley Park. Lochmueller provided ongoing maintenance of traffic signal timing while construction was completed.
